Pretty much everyone who owns a 350/450/500 and takes semi-decent care of it gets 400 hours out of the piston, a number repeatedly proven out by owners using the bike. These sellers don't know more then KTM but what they do know is EXC service intervals are for race conditions and have been since long before the 500 came out. The service intervals are short, . . oil change 250 mile, oil and filters every 1000 mile. . . . . but all the latest enduro bikes are similar. A couple of lad's i ride with have the 450exc and love em. The HT cooler will aid in extending the drain interval, no doubt. Also, realize that KTM's official drain interval is in hours, 15 to be exact, right out of the owners manual. At dual sport average speeds, you could easily be at 600+ miles or more right there. I kinda of go in between and change the oil every 2-3 rides depending how tough/fast they are which is 5-8 hours for me. And I change the oil filter every other oil change. A 130-140kg 2 cylinder 20 litre capacity single seat "robust" (not road plastic like KLE or Transalp) reliable bike capable of 160km/h, 300km++ range and reasionably rough track usability (as good as a KTM 690e et al) would be, for me, the perfect bike for 90% of my riding and I would be quite happy to pay $20k for it. For comparison, my KTM Adventure is 5K between oil changes. Uses two filters & 3 drain plugs. Takes me about 20 minutes for an oil change. Valves are also every 5K or once a year. Takes maybe 5 minutes to actually check and adjust, but another 1/2 hour to tear it all down to get access to the valves, then put it all back together.
